Grid Rules: Heavy Work

If your disability does not meet the medical requirements determined by the SSA, then you can look to the grid rules to determine eligibility.

The grid rules are organized by residual functional capacity (“RFC”). Your RFC is the most that you can do despite your limitations.

Although not really a set of rules, the final category to consider are those individuals capable of performing work at the heavy or very heavy level.

What Are the Heavy Work Requirements?

Lifting Heavy work requires lifting up to 100lbs occasionally and 50 pounds frequently. Very heavy work is any work that requires one to lift more than 100lbs. Standing/Walking At both levels, standing and/or walking is required for 6 hours in an 8-hour day, while sitting is required for the remaining 2 hours.

Heavy and Very Heavy Grid Rules: Will I Be Found Disabled?

If capable of performing work at the heavy or very heavy levels, a claimant would essentially be able to perform any job in the national economy. At this level, generally, the claimant does not even suffer from a severe impairment. Additionally, at this level, a claimant should be capable of performing their past work. Either of these two situations provide for a finding of ‘not disabled.’ Because of this, there are no grid rules for individuals capable of heavy or very heavy work.
